Ocho Octes - TEN DUCK DAY

  • Oct. 8th, 2008 at 2:31 PM
And to think I was possibly going to go to Perry Lakes for lunch, or even stay in the office. Really, on a day like today I'm glad I wasn't stuck inside.

Only at Herdsman lake can you see 10 species of duck in your lunch hour I'm sure.

1. Pacific Black Duck
Mallard (I'm not counting these)
2. Grey Teal
3. Australian Wood Duck
4. Australian Shelduck
5. Pink-eared Duck (with a funny looking duckling)
6. Australasian Shoveller
7. Hardhead
8. Blue-billed Duck
9. Musk Duck
10. FRECKLED DUCK! A single female (or possibly a non-breeding male, but at this time of year males would be in breeding plumage). Just sitting under the melaleuca in front of the carpark with the Pacific Black Ducks, minding her own business.

I is happy now. Sunshine and birdies for lunch.

P.S. I am smitten with Herdsman Fresh.

I took the Sweetheart Fosters to Purrfect Pals for a checkup, they've been taking turns sharing a wheeze and a cough. Their calici virus had improved into a general URI so they gave me some antibiotics (smells like the Pink Stuff, any parent of a human newborn will recognize that description) and they've been making improvements.

While I was there, the conversation turned to the other two kittens of this litter that were too sick to come home with me before. I was introduced to Anthony and Tony, and my heart felt a little twang for them. They were stuck in a cage for six weeks together and poor Tony with an e-collar. I asked Susan (the lady in charge of the fosters) if she liked, I could take Anthony and Tony home with me with the rest of their litter mates. Susan's eyes lit up and she checked with the doctor on staff to see if they were ready - and they were.

Tribble has been on the computer all day..

  • Oct. 7th, 2008 at 11:21 PM
I want to introduce myself.. I've posted here a couple times and I REALLY ENJOY THIS COMMUNITY!!! My name is Leo but I go by "Sunny" My friends call me Sunny... My parents call me Leo... I DO NOT LIKE THAT NAME!!! (Personal family reasons I wont go into..) And this is Tribble.. She is the only one I have these days... I had 7 cats two years ago and I lost them all 6 months ago when I hadta spend some time in jail... When I lost them all I found Tribble as a kitten and I begged for her.. The girl that gave her to me was unsure of how good a parent I was going to be considering I had a BRAIN ANEURYSM 8 years ago... But I LOVE MY CATS!!! They are SO IMPORTANT TO ME!!! I've had cats my entire life... Because of my brain injury I have issues that put me back home into Moms basement and she has dogs... The dogs LOVE TRIBBLE... And Tribble loves those dogs too... But we dont let them live together... She starts to get irritated with them cuz they keep trying to smell her butt... LOL.. So she and I live in the basement... And she is ALWAYS here in my room with me...Photobucket She is my life companion at this time...
We pretty much share our lives together.. We have even learned how both of us can use the computer at the same time... Yup she's pretty much my life... Good pussy too... hee hee

Tweek enjoys being back home atop his fridge.

More Tweek and some Fergi, too! )
We are located in Enfield, CT which is good for adopting out to someone in either Connecticut OR Massachusetts. We've been looking to rehome these guys since July, we are getting a bit desperate because it's simply too much for us to keep them anymore.

According to the breeder, these two hatched in early 2007. They are banded. These are great birds, they just aren't easily trainable. They are the first pigeons we've had and we intended to keep them as pets. We call them Jasper and Juniper. We read about how docile pigeons are, but despite all our attempts, these two never became docile. After trying for a time, we ended up quitting because handling them causes them much more anxiety than benefit. We don't want them to be unhappy and we don't have the proper knowledge or habitat to allow them to breed. I want them to go to either an experienced breeder or someone who knows better how to keep pigeons as pets (and tame them). These two are quite anxious around people. They've been living on our enclosed back porch for some time, but this obviously isn't ideal. We don't see pets as disposable or anything of the sort, we just want them to be the happiest they can be and we recognise that we seem to be unable to provide the happy home which we hoped we could. It hasn't been an easy decision, so I ask you keep any disparaging remarks you may have to yourself. A rehoming fee is negotiable if we are able to see that you have healthy, happy birds and a proper habitat. Please email enquiries/your details to smartpigeons@gmail.com or respond here.

Crystal Bundled Up

  • Oct. 7th, 2008 at 11:43 PM
My cat Crystal usually hates it when we try and bundle her up in blankets but we can't help it, it's so adorable. I tonight it got cold enough that she put up with us.

I had to share.

Please vote for us...

The shelter that receives the most votes will win $10,000 to use towards the animals.

I volunteer with the CNY Cat Coalition, which is no-kill and does not have a physical shelter. Our cats are fostered in private homes, and then taken to PetSmart for adoption (I am one of the volunteers for the Adoption Center, so I socialize the kitties and introduce them to potential adopters).

Our limited funds go towards spay & neuter programs, food, litter, and medications. All of the cats we adopt out are, of course, fixed...but we also support low-cost spay & neuter programs for pet parents with low incomes, as well as trap-and-release programs for feral cats. This $10,000 award would really help!

Vet recommendations?

  • Oct. 7th, 2008 at 8:42 PM
This is a request for kittypixers residing in Manhattan: any recommendations for vets? Giggy and family's usual vet just sold his practice and his other favorite vet is 80 miles away.

Here is Giggy looking perfectly pleased in his silly fuschia headgear and scarf. He doesn't like sharp needles on his tushie but he does manage to look good nevertheless. Doesn't he!

Baby Moo mans!

  • Oct. 7th, 2008 at 4:13 PM
Baby Moo mans, click here!

I will not get another exotic shorthair. I will not get another exotic shorthair. I will not get another exotic shorthair.

One of my good friends emailed me the other day saying she was thinking of getting an exotic and sent me this breeder's web site. SO CUTE.

One day I will have another Moo man but not any time soon. I don't think I could resist an exotic kitten if it was just given to me though! I got Moo man as an adult but the kittens... I WANT ONE SO BAD! I WANT A BABY MOO MAN!

Sorry for all the silliness, they are just my favorite breed. One day I will have the pitter patter of baby Moo mans in my home darn it! lol :)

Too bad I do not have any kitten photos of Moo man. :(

PLEASE SAY A PRAYER....

my mothers 5-yr old calico DSH has had breatheing problems that have gradually grown worse... we just got back from the vets - where they tested for & ruled out heartworm, leukemia & feline AIDS. The X-rays showed that there are some white spots (dots) around her heart (which also happens to be on the actual left side of her chest - instead of in the middle like most cats) & at least a few spots/dots (I couldn't tell) in her lungs.

The vet is keeping her overnight to try giving her some other antibiotics (since bloodtests definitely show some sort of infection) & hopefully something to help her breathe easier... unfortunately I think that doing an ultra sound may be out of the question due to finances & the actual question of - Could a $400 Ultrasound really show if theres something that's ACTUALLY TReatable - or would it just confirm the bad things???

Does anyone know - I know humans can get cancer from prolonged Radon Gas exposure... can it affect cats in the same way??

please say a few prayers for my Mom.

Mom's sweetie, Isabelle.

Busy busy busy...

Well, we were supposed to have someone over that was bringing us a twin size bed for the guest room/office and they never showed so fuck 'em.

I did get some dishes cleaned and the crested geckos tank got a full scrub down. Striker was shedding and as much as I know you are NOT supposed to help pull it off, he was having trouble. So I had to help him. It was on his face. Stuck on an eye. He bit me, poor thing was scared. But after all the shed was off, he actually let me pet him on the back and on his head and chin. Guess he felt much better.

We were also supposed to have some people come in to check on the new slider door that was put in and fix anything was done wrong. That would have been done tomorrow, but they came early and asked if it would be ok to do it today rather then tomorrow. I said definitely YES cause I actually have to work all day tomorrow. So it worked out great. Well they had a couple extra screws they needed to put in and such. That was all.

Now, I'm trying to relax a little. Gonna be picking Dave up from the speedline after he gets out of work. We are going to New York this weekend, and really want to rent a car so we don't have to worry about what might happen to ours on that long trip. BUT I found out today that they have a $400 holding deposit. So the yummy little $141 4 days rental total is now bumped up another $400. We get that $400 back when we bring the car back, but still. Bloody hell thats a lot. How do people do it? I guess when you use a credit card its no big deal but we will use our debit so it gets taken out of our bank account right away. Boooo. Gonna talk about it tonight and see what we want to do.

Not Fasta Pasta

  • Oct. 7th, 2008 at 9:33 PM
Posted to [info]food_porn.

A few months ago I bought myself one of these -

Shiny innit? I promised myself that when we had a house with a big kitchen bench I'd get one and try my hand at making pasta. Well, we found the house over a year ago. I bought the extruder in July. And the weekend just passed I FINALLY got around to attempting to make pasta. And after what I experienced I think fresh pasta will be on the menu a lot more often!

I tried a recipe in my pasta cookbook that involved flour (I bought 00 for the purpose), eggs and a bit of oil. I decided to make the dough in my breadmaker - because it has a pasta setting, I have a feeling it only really works for the recipe that comes with the breadmaker though (which uses water, not eggs). It didn't knead properly but that was okay, I finished it by hand, adding a smidge of water because it was a bit dry.

Cat Prayer

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray this cushy life to keep.
I pray for toys that look like mice,
And sofa cushions, soft and nice.
I pray for gourmet kitty snacks,
And someone nice to scratch my back,
For windowsills all warm and bright,
For shadows to explore at night.
I pray I'll always stay real cool
And keep the secret feline rule
To NEVER tell a human that
The world is really ruled by CATS!

I wish this was another happy post about Yohji and Jazz, but it's not. Yohji's acting weird, and it's starting to scare me. I figured if anyone might know what's going on with him, it would be you guys.

Cut for nastiness )
And to keep it legal, here's the kitty in question:

This is why I can never rightfully use my damn mouse.

Cat butt 1 = Calico
Cat butt 2 = Soda
For about a year, this guy has been coming around my house and I've been leaving out food for him. I'm pretty sure someone dumped him. One day, he showed up very beat up (his nose was cut open and his back paw was bleeding, his tail was bent in half and then with another bend at the tip, and most of the hair was gone), so I brought him in and took him to the vet, where he tested positive for FIV.

I am very sad that I am unable to keep him - the biggest reason being I have a male cat indoors, and while Alexei (which is what I've been calling him) is wonderful with female cats and quite the gentleman, he and my male do not like each other. Under other circumstances, I would probably let them work it out, but I don't want to risk my uninfected male becoming infected because of a fight.

Alexei is extremely affectionate and would just love to be somebody's cuddle buddy. He's a big guy who's really been packing on the pounds since he came inside, and is healing up well from his wounds. He's okay with dogs, if a little wary, and just a complete sweetheart. He can be a talker at times, but I think if he wasn't confined to my bedroom and laundry room he wouldn't talk quite so much when left alone. :) He is neutered and vaccinated, still has all of his claws, and hasn't sprayed once in the house, even with another male.

Here is a link to flicker, where I have a few pictures of him. http://www.flickr.com/photos/22998252@N02/2919640450/

The two pictures of him in a dog crate with the two girls is from when I had to flea bomb the house and get everyone outside somehow. There was certainly some wrangling that day. One of the females is my roommate's, who my male doesn't like, which is why Alexei is in there with them instead of my male...

I have called and called and called shelters and rescues throughout NJ and PA. No one will take him - they either will immediately put down FIV+ cats, don't accept them, or simply have no room. He's such a good guy with a solid temperment, I can't let him be killed.

Any resources will be appreciated! I am willing to drive a fairly long distance to get him to a good, warm, safe place where he isn't trapped in a little room all the time and where he will be loved for the rest of his life!

New place

  • Oct. 6th, 2008 at 10:14 AM
So, my boyfriend and I moved into our apartment over the weekend...and I was so down about our landlord not giving us permission to keep Jinx...Well, I was taking out the trash Saturday night and what did I see in the dumpster? Cans of "tuna dinner" cat food! The dumpster is only for our three apartments (one building)!
clearly, we arn't the only ones hiding a pet. I can't afford another move right now so we didn't give our 60 days notice.

e're just going to leave a radio on during the day (because Jinx meows SO loud when we're gone) and hope for the best, until we can afford to move into a (nicer) pet friendly apartment.

Hopefully everything works out. More pictures to come, we're bringing Jinx home tonight!

Yeah woo!!

A rare photo of Tweek with his eyes open.

I'm pleased to say that the boys are back in their home and have generously allowed me to come with. We're still somewhat in transition as a screw up at the carpet company has left us only half carpeted. So they are having fun sniffing around the disorder.
