Simba playing on the cat tower

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 10:49 AM

(click on pic, it's an animated gif)

His eyes are much better, only his right eye has a bit of milky tearing.

Both he and Lucy spent the night in the house, but we kept the screen door to the cat enclosure prepped so they could go out if the felt more secure in the small kennel out there.

Will be brushing them out again soon, once they get their 2nd breakfast. Oh yeah, they prefer to have fish for 1st breakfast, red meat for 2nd breakfast, and whatever for their 3rd. But today, they aren't begging for the 2nd breakfast yet, so they might be over the OMIGODIMSTARVING.

a sappy, made-for-tv story and a picspam!

Hi, I was just accepted to this community. I figured I'd make an introduction worthy of a cat community. I've been lurking here for a long time, and I'm so glad to be a member now. All of your pictures are wonderful -- I'll look at them when I'm in a bad mood for a pick-me-up.

I'm Ashley, I'm twenty-one, and I am already the crazy cat lady. Instead of telling you about myself, a recent post inspired me to tell a positive story about a cat. (Of course, this also includes pictures!)

In February 2006, I was living with my grandparents. One of our rescued cats had a litter of kittens early in the month. She'd never exhibited signs of going into heat, so we were surprised when we realized she was pregnant. She had some of the most BEAUTIFUL kittens. Unfortunately, our financial situation deteriorated very rapidly, and we had to move from our huge house into a place half the size. We now had a landlord (something we weren't used to) who wouldn't permit more animals than what we had. After we moved in during April 2007, I was in charge of giving the kittens away. I was 18 at the time, and it was something I'd never done before. I was really heartbroken about it. Although I had a very strict screening process for adoptive parents, someone made it around my process. Everything happened so fast, I felt powerless to stop it. I was so heartbroken over giving these beautiful babies away that I didn't stop and collect my thoughts sufficiently. The thing is that I must have known something terrible was going to happen.

I must have had some intuitive hunch because I broke down crying and I did something I couldn't explain. For some reason, I felt compelled to do this; I couldn't explain it, I just knew that it had to be done. I'll get to that later. )

I know that's a super-long story. If you read it, I really appreciate it. :)

Now that the sappy part is out of the way, let me introduce my family! )

I have a billion more pictures of all the wonderful cats who've been in my life. I'll save those for another time, though. This post is already hammy enough.

Writer's Block: Just another manic Monday

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 9:30 AM

Do you look forward to returning to work/school on Mondays or do you live for the weekend? What do you enjoy most about weekends? What do you dread most about school and/or work?

The only reason I go to work is because I get paid every second Thursday.

I live for the weekends baby.

My sister has a new member to her family!

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 6:04 PM
This is the new baby:

I'm wondering if anyone has some good names for her. My sister would like something "pretty" but is stuck on names. If you guys have ideas I could throw them her way :)

This kitty is only 4 weeks old, but was abandoned and surrendered to the humane society. She has no mommy or siblings with her and is all alone. It's quite sad... but my sister already has a young female cat that we're hoping will take her under her wing. They'll be separated for a few days, and be introduced after then.

Thanks for your help!

Playtime with Jack!

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 5:36 PM
This evening we're having some supervised playtime outside of the bedroom. Jack was getting a little stir crazy in there and there isn't much room to play in there anyway. Tilly sat at a distance and occasionally growled her disapproval. You can see her eyes glowing with hate in the background.

Lotsa cute pics! )

It's so nice to have a cat who likes to play! Tilly's a big fuddy duddy. I love her, but she's a bit of a killjoy!

Video coming soon, whenever it finishes uploading.

After a careful examinations

We have more reason to despise that previous owner of Simba and Lucy.

Simba is at least 30% under what his body mass should be, and has folds of skin hanging. He is the first cat I have ever seen that has split ends on his fur. And it's so coarse and rough. He has dermatitis, probably due to piss poor diet and no grooming, and allergy affected eyes. Luckily we have the medicated eye ointment to treat them. After one treatment, his eyes stopped weeping. Will get dosed twice a day for a week.

Lucy: that poor little muffin must have been slapped or hit, because when you go to pet or brush her, she squints her eyes down, flattens her ears to the sides, and ducks. She does relax once she realises that it's pats she is getting.

The both of them are protein starved, and eat 5 serves of meat, fish, or quality canned food a day. Lucy eats a bit less of it than Simba, as she isn't as underweight as Simba is (probably was at least catching mice when she got out) but he will finish what she leaves. After just 3 days of proper feeding, and twice a day gentle grooming, Simba is showing a few patches of the gold glint on his fur. Lucy's fur is also getting softer in patches.

They both are starting to come into the house. Simba has made himself more at home indoors than Lucy. Probably because her ex humans used to keep her locked in the attic of their house. It's all good. She comes in a bit further every time.

And to keep it legal:

Bombay or DSH?

  • Nov. 7th, 2009 at 11:10 PM
I was watching Cats 101 and they were showing Bombays. They look so much like my Jasper. But I thought he was a Domestic Shorthair. So, I ask my kittypixers, what is he?
ETA: Earlier Evy [my 6 month Tabby] as lying on top of Jasper and grooming his head. Jasper put up with it for a good minute then growled cause she started on his face and left. The grooming in general, that is a sign that they like each other?

Tilly has a new baby brudder!

  • Nov. 7th, 2009 at 6:07 PM
Meet Jack!

I got him at Petsmart today. He'd only been there for a day and he'd already charmed the Petsmart workers. I think if I'd waited til tomorrow to go looking he would already have been taken! He's a total cuddlebug and loves scritchies and kisses and snuggles. That is when I can get him to come out from under the bed. He's still a little unsure of his new digs. He's had dinner and has used his stinky box, so he's settled in a little bit. He's chillin' under the bed right now.

Tilly has not been terribly pleased about his presence, although she seems to forget about him until she looks toward the bedroom door and then she remembers and sits by it and makes rude noises. I'm going to take it slow but I hope these two will tolerate each other at the very least.

Jack has a slightly wonky mouth. He and his siblings had been thrown from a car into traffic and he was hit by a car and his jaw was broken. It was wired together and fixed and now it works fine, but it doesn't close completely so his teeth show a little when his mouth is closed.

More pictures once he's more at ease. You know there will be lots of posts from me!

The rest of the photos from the last week! :) Figured I'd post them before my roommate and I go pick up her new kitten! Plenty of spam to come from that, I'm sure!

The kitten of doom! This is the one who had an intimate relationship with my finger. ;) She settled down very quickly and is adorable now! So much so she actually got adopted yesterday!

New kittens

  • Nov. 6th, 2009 at 11:24 PM
I went with my friend today to pick out a new kitten. She left with two, a brother and sister pair. Here they are after she brought them home, poor things are huddled together in the bathroom corner. I'm sure they'll warm to their new home soon :)

The white boy will probably be Snowball...no decision on the black and white tuxedo girl yet.

First case: a cat gets swine flu

  • Nov. 7th, 2009 at 4:31 AM

The Cat Who Got Swine Flu

cats
Derek Speirs for The New York Times House cats like these appear to be vulnerable to catching flu from humans.

A few days after two members of an Ames, Iowa, family came down with the flu, they noticed their 13-year-old cat wasn’t feeling too well either. The cat has since become the first documented case of a feline with the new H1N1 virus, commonly called swine flu.

The unusual case has riveted pet owners and health officials. Companion animals have been known to contract flu from other species — canine influenza (H3N8) originated in horses, and cats contract avian influenza (H5N1) from eating birds.

But this appears to be the first time a cat has contracted influenza from a human. )

Wow, I've been slacking off again! Quite a number of photos to share, but first.....GUESS WHO GOT ADOPTED ON WEDNESDAY!?

:D!!!!!!

Fingers super crossed that this'll be his forever home. It always makes me nervous when people CONTINUOUSLY say (not just a couple times), "we'll try this and see how it goes". O_O Positive attitude, if only for my sanity, please! I'm sure it'll be fine, but the nerves, the nerves! It's weird not having him around anymore. He lived with us just over a month, but I miss the old guy! I told Sarah (the director) if he, for whatever reason, comes back, I'm keeping him. He's perfect, and at least I understand him!

Other kitties who have been adopted: Troi/Samantha! (adopted by a volunteer), Annie, Celeste!, Monkey and Posey (together!), Ash-Lee, Onyx, Ebony, Tigger, James, Mitzi, Marta, Punkin, Sugar!, Dazzle (coming to live with us! My roommate adopted her :D), Beethoven, Celery, Coal,Gabriella, Nick,  JoJo, Snow Monkey, Lady Grey, Opal, Gigi and Kaede (the mouse colored kitten) (together!), and Leo. I'm probably forgetting others, but it's been a busy week!!

We're also having a Black Cat Bonanza weekend! We're only having black kittens brought in from foster homes, and for those who want to adopt either a black kitten or cat, they draw from a hat and the adoption fee could be anywhere from $5-$40! Normal is $50. :D They accidentally put on the website that it was today...but they honored it anyway for those who came in and Celeste and Onyx got adopted! We're hoping to get some lovely black kitties out the door this weekend! :D

On a sad note (before the happiness of pictures), Scooter and Mombi got returned. The people gave Mombi LESS THAN A WEEK to come around, after we talked with them for TWO HOURS that she was timid and needed awhile to adjust. The lady initially came back on Wednesday (she was adopted on Sunday!), but turned around and waited until the next Sunday to come back. D: Apparently she called on Tuesday wanting to know if she could adopt again. WTF, get out lady. Scooter got returned because he attacked the lady's sheltie. The cat is about as big as the dog! >:( Whatever. Both of these two will be a part of the sale this weekend.

Now, pictures!

How many black cats are in this picture? Look closely!

Dear Hugh Hefner:

You are a sweet, adorable, quirky and of course sexy boy, but for the love of all that is holy, please adjust to the time change already. I do not need to be awake before the crack of dawn, nor do I need to be howled at for an hour every day because you think it's dinner time. I realize that your evening meal must be served by 5pm, but please come to terms with the fact that 5pm comes one hour later than it did last week. As long as we're on the subject of annoying behaviors, would it be possible for you to cease with the "I'm the King of the World" howl every time you jump up on something high? The other cats manage to jump on top of the mantel or bookcase without such proclamations. Thx.

Love,

Your Human

PS. Vettie has agreed to stop cuddling with you and giving you baths if you don't come to grips with the time change, as I need a little leverage and she likes having a less cranky mama around. You'd be missing this... )

Continuing Integration

  • Nov. 6th, 2009 at 11:54 AM

The new kitten is continuing to integrate into the household. By which I mean "snuggle with Smudge at every opportunity and colonize my housemate and snuggle with Smudge some more. He is also playing with Boogie some, but Boogie has contracted an eye infection from Eckersley (being treated and clearing up), so he's a bit more grumpy.

Last night, there was a precious scene-- my housemate had vacuumed, and placed one of the cat toys on the bookshelf, dangling down on the floor. Bugalu was sitting by the top of it, near the rod part, and playing with it when it moved. Eckersley was down on the floor, batting at the feathers over his head. When he got a good swat or tug, the feathers would move up to Boogie, who would also swipe at them. I was being held in the reading chair by Smudge, so didn't get any pictures.

Someday, there will be seriously good pictures of these cats (anyone who notices the Big Honking Camera, that is Terry's).

Not bad for less than 12 hrs

Simba (l) and Lucy (r) enjoy their new digs. We couldn't coax Lucy out of the box last night, so we just made sure there was food, water, sand box and Simba in the enclosure with her. We left the door slightly open so our crew could sniff and be sniffed but no fighting. Made for a noisy night, but not too bad. Gave them each a box of their own, and a scratch post.

Was very pleased to see Lucy out and about this morning.

Simba is watching some wattlebirds, and Lucy is listening to the neighbors chickens.
